Got a new block
Got a new block
Hey guys ! The engine in my 92 Z28 "died" today. Stil driveable but not
fixable. The wrist pin on the #6 cylinder decided to walk out and carve a
nice deep hole in my cylinder wall.
Now I have a 91 350 truck block which is non-roller. (100654727). Problem
is.. I cant exactly use my roller CompCams XR270HR cam I had in there. It
was a pretty big cam too...
Anyway, what I wanted to ask if what you
guys would recommend for this engine ? I'm gonna be using it with stock L98
ported and polished heads, and ported stock TPI intake and a stock TB. It
will have Edelbrock TES headers also. Any suggestions/recommendation would
be greatly appreciated

Ported and polished heads, ported stock TPI base, ported plenum, Comp Cams XR270HR-10 cam (lift .495/.502 duration 218/224 lobe separation 110), Edelbrock TES headers, LT4 valve springs, Crane AFPR, Flowmaster catback with LT1 style tips, MSD coil & wires...
"Take that auto, drop it in first, hold the brakes, stomp the gas and grin from ear to ear! :-)

You can still use that roller cam. All you need is a set of "retrofit" roller lifters, a roller timing set (insurance mostly), and a cam button. All of these are available from Comp. The lifters aren't cheap but the roller profile is so much better than the flat tappet that you'd be shooting yourself in the shorts by downgrading.
I have a Comp XR282HR in my 400, it's great. It's much better than the 282S that I had for about 10 years. The roller lobes look almost square compared to the egg-shaped flat-tappet ones.

Yeah but see... if I had the money I would have bought a roller block to start with. What I would I like for now is to have a decent engine while I look for another roller block to build up and make a 383 out of. So what would u think a good cam would be, even though hydraulics are more inferior ?

I'm surprised to here that block isn't a roller. In '89 GM went roller. '96 they started running roller rockers. I just rebuilt a 350 out of an '89 chevy 1/2 ton 4x4 and it had a roller. Do you have the engine's history, I'd be interested to here why it isn't a roller.
