oil leak

Damn, i finished my motor swap, and its leaking oil again. It seems to be leaking from by the timing chain and oil pan. I probably did that seal wrong when i put the pan on. How hard is it to drop the oil pan with the engine in the car to change the seal? Will just adding new gasket sealer help at all? Thanks
Matt

Let me guess..... it doesn't leak when idling, but it spews when you get on it; and you stripped the smog pump off of it.

Am I right? If I am, I'll tell you what you left off that you shouldn't have.

Just out of curiosity, RB, what would the smog pump have to do with it? Maybe fuel pump?

How did I ever guess?

Look on the front of the block, pass side, down low, next to the balancer. You will see 2 bolt holes. Those were originally the motor mount location from 55-57; more recently they are the smog pump bracket mounting point. Look at the upper one of the 2. If your car has a mechanical fuel pump, you would see the fuel pump push rod through that hole.... it basically goes directly into the crankcase.

Put a short bolt, less than ¾" long, in that hole, with a little silicone on the threads. I'd bet your problem will be much lessened.

Nope, seems im incompetant after all. That is blocked off allready and its not leaking from there. It seems to be leaking from either the timing chain cover or the pan. It looks like im missing a bolt from my timing chain, could that cause an oil leak? Will i still need to drop the pan maybe to fix it? How hard is it to drop the pan anyway? Thanks

Well, I guess it's time to take it to the car wash, sterilize it, and see where it's coming from. A whole lot easier than the "maybe it's this, maybe it's that, how hard is this or that anyway" thing.

or get a dye and uv light kit and check for leaks that way. No biggie either way. I like the UV light method because it's there in flourescent color, staring back at you.
