car wont idle please help

hey all,
Im haveing some serious problems with my car, its a 1986 firebird trans am with a carburated 305. i can get it to start but it wont stay running unless i give it gas, when i get it out on the road its REALLY slugish and it spews black smoke. it stalls out everytime i come to a stop, than its real hard to start again. I also noticed that when i turn the key wothout going all the way it makes a clickin noise from around the carb, is it supposed to do that? I dont get it the car was running fine until a couple of days ago. any help and sugjestions are apreciated, thanks
joe

Sounds like the choke unloader. Located at rear of carb on passenger side. Easiest way to check is to get a piece of vacuum hose and hook onto it. Then suck on the hose and watch it. It should pull in. Then put your tongue on the hose and block it off and watch. It should hold vacuum and not move. It's easy to change, only 2 screws and does not cost very much. Also check the choke linkage to see if something is hanging up, or maybe just dirty and sticking. Just spray it all with carb cleaner including the linkage on the drivers side. Then spray down the bores of the carb and get the throttle shafts. The choke plate on the primaries should be loose, but on the secondaries you will have to push the top plate out of the way to spray into the bores. If still problems, get it looked at. To get you by, you could adjust the idle up a little bit so it won't die when you stop.
