305 HO
305 HO
I just picked up a car with the 305 HO and I wanted to know what makes it an HO compared to the other 305. I would assume probably different heads, carb, and exhaust but I wanted to be sure. Thanks.

The heads are the same as the LG4.
THe differences are the pistons - dished in the LG4 through 85, flat-top in the L69; the exhaust - bigger manifolds on the L69, 2¼" outlets and Y-pipe in the L69 vs. 2" in the LG4, big oval pipe in front of the cat in the L69 vs. 2¼" in the LG4, 2¾" I-pipe and large honeycomb cat on the L69 vs. 2¼" I-pipe and pellet-bed cat on the LG4; electric fan vs. mechanical fan; 3.73 gears vs. grocery-cart gears; more aggressive timing curve with knock sensor vs. grocery-cart timing so lazy it doesn't need a knock sensor; a halfway decent cam instead of the "peanut" cam; and carb calibration.
The end result is 190 HP out of the L69, and anywhere from 145 to 170 HP out of the LG4, depending on the year. Starting in 85 the LG4 started getting upgrades (better cat, better timing curve with knock sensor, higher compression pistons) that narrowed the gap.

I have an '83 Z28 with an LG4 and I have this cat. This is a honeycomb cat correct? I think '82s had the pellet type.

The L69 (HO) has 40 more hp than the same year LG4 because of higher compression pistons (9.5:1 instead of 8.5:1), a bigger camshaft, a MUCH bigger exhaust system, and a Corvette hi-flow cat converter.
It also had a fairly well breathing dual-snorkel air cleaner with 2 cold air scoops.
