I've never seen or heard of a book on building a 60° 6-cylinder, since nobody really cares about hot-rodding them. That would be a really high-$$$$$ way to go slow.

There are lots of good books about building small block V8s. Anything by David Vizard, John Lingenfelter, or Alex Walordy would be a great place to start. I see them at local speed shops all the time; check your local libreary; or search Summit & Jeg's for those names.

For a "plain old" rebuild, any good repair manual should have the data and procedural outline you need. That includes Helms manuals and any old Motor manuals you can find. Haynes and Chiltons just don't seem to cut it.

As for an overview, this is a decent site:

While I've never "dug too deep" into a 6-cyl before, my bet is that the same procedures and techniques when used for V8 rebuilds would apply to a 6-cyl. The idea is basically the same for both engines--especially if we're talking GM engines of similar years.

Personally, I used How to Build the Smallblock Chevrolet by Larry Atherton and Larry Schreib (ISBN: 0-931472-21-1) when I rebuilt the 350 in my IROC. It has step-by-step instuctions with illustrations for each step of the process from start to finish.

Very thorough and highly recommended.
