Engine Identification for TPI
Engine Identification for TPI
I'm trying to identify the engine in my car, the kid I bought it from said its an 88 transplant, but the valve covers tell another story. The ID numbers on the head deck are V0113DDA and 1GL148618. Do these numbers also tie to the VIN? How? I also want to check the tranny, ID 9FMM003B. Thanks for the help.
Racin,
The last six digits of the number on the deck are supposed to match the sequence digits in the VIN (the last six digits). If your engine is from an '88 and is not original, you may have some trouble verifying the year from that number. Look at the rear ledge of the bolck, around the distributor "bump-out". There should be a casting number and date code in that area. Remember a date code of "09/87" or later can be an '88 model year.
If the rocker covers are not center-bolt design, the engine is not from an '88 unless the heads have been changed (some aftermarket heads use perimter bolt style covers). An '88 should be a roller cam, one-piece rear main seal, single poly 'V' (serpentine) belt accessory drive, and still has the ninth injector for cold starting.
