What's the average "life" of a heater core?

I broke the part where the temperature door attaches to the cable. Although I have come up with a temporary fix (involving a hose clamp). It will need to be replaced at some point, which involves going in and removing the heater core anyway. I'm wondering if I should do preventative maintenance and just crack it all open and replace the core now. The car has been very well taken care of over the years, with regular coolant changes. Any idea how long these things last? This core is original from the factory.

Murphy says that if you go in and DON'T replace the heater core, it will leak soon after.

They are cheap, if you are in there I would replace it.
