code 33 w/ new heads, intake, lifters, help!
Hey all, let me tell you about my problem.
I just installed a new set of cylinder heads (trick flow 195s), new intake manifold (performer), and 1.6 roller rockers. I got the car running today but it runs horrible. It sounds like its missing on one cylinder, I've got to check the plugs. The problem though is that it tripped a code 15 (fifteen) and 33 (thirty three). The code 15 could have come from when I was filling up the radiator. The code 33 though is boggling me. I checked the vacuum and it is only running like six to eight inches. (shouldn't it be around 22?) We checked the rockers again and everything is good including valve lash. The idle is awful when it runs and when you put the pedal into it you can hear it popping and stuff.)
Thanks for any help, Mike :hail:

the code 33 is probably from the low vacuum. It will continue to run like crap untill you fix the problem.
What you describe definatly sounds like a valve lash issue. How did you set the lash? Try setting the lash with the engine running. I find that it can be hard to feel for zero lash just by turning the push rods. I like to jiggle my rods instead
. No, but seriously try setting the lash with the engine warm and idleing. There is alot of posts about this and how to do it. I guess it could also be an ignition issue but something would have to be really off. Like mixing up all the wires or, like, having the timing set to 25 degrees ATDC.

hey, thanks, I checked it out again and it was a valve lash problem. One of the valves was set too tight. now I've got everything together but I can't find a set of valve covers that'll clear my rockers. I ordered a set of tall ones but they aren't wide enough so the rocker is hitting the side. I called summit and they told me they don't carry a valve cover that'll work (it has to be centerbolt). what a PITA.

are the stock ones wide enough but, not tall enough? or both? I guess you could buy the center bolt head to old school valave cover adapters (real $$$$ though)

the stock ones aren't tall enough or wide enough. I called summit and they had sold me a set of the proform ones (whole lotta money), but they were too narrow (plenty tall though). I just ordered another set that should definatly fit, they're like the custom fit ones. they were a lot of money too, but what can you do? I got to get the car running since I'm heading back to school. I was a little pissed though to be spending over $100 on valve covers.
