Ok well it looks like at least some rings are bad if not more on my 305 TPI. I'm going to pull the engine as soon as possible and start working. Since my backup Fiero GT(yeah yeah i know, but i do have a supercharged TA
deciced to go to hell today im going to need to get the TA working pretty quick. Im running on a $2k mac budget which of course can fix the problem, but when the engine is on the stand, who can resist a few mods? Im hoping to find a stroker kit for it although i havent had much luck. I have heard about 334 kits for the 305 but have not found retailers for them. I want to have my lower end tough enough for 500hp since this summer i will be upgrading from 6psi to 12. I was also considering a miniram. Is that worth it for the money? Basically just tell me what you guys think on the budget. Thanks.

Have you considered a partial crate engine from GM? The 400CI Sportsman engine block is available at Scoggin-Dickey for $1,499.00. If you want a more complete bottom end and a few less cubes than the 400 CID, the ZZ4 block kit is a pretty good deal, and can use your 305 parts. (350 CI, 4-bolt main ZZ4 shortblock, P/N 12561723, $1,739.95.) Of course you'd have to supply heads and a cam, and the cost would break over the $2,000.00 mark by a few bucks, but maybe you don't want 400+ HP for your ThirdGen.
If you can nurse your 305 along for a bit longer, put one of these in the stand and start building as time/budget allow.
If you're really crunched for time, you can get the complete 330HP 350 for a few bucks more. (330HP/350 engine, P/N 12486041, $2,079.00) The only thing you would need would be a Vortec intake manifold and your carb or TPI system with a modified intake base to fit the Vortec heads.
If none of these fit your needs, call SDPC and ask about options. They even have 305 blocks if you want to stick with the small bore.
P.S. - There's always an excuse to keep a spare 350 around the shop.

Or you can get the GM Goodwrench replacement motor for about $1250 and put Vortec heads (another $450ish) and better cam in it, then add intake and carb and get almost 400hp. with rest of stuff needed, be right around 2000-2200...
Chevy High performance magazine did it. There is a thread here called Dynoing the GM 350, I think, that has the links. pretty cool!!!

Unfortunatly I live in a county that tests emissions every 2 years. What are the laws related to emissions when a new engine is put in? Also, I run a blower into it so I would prefer the TPI intake style. And I totally agree that a spare 350 or ten is always good to have around

ive heard that as far as emmisions go, you cannot put an engine in that was not offered as oem. or something like that

its true about the emmisions law. you arent allowed to replace it. but i did it and passed smog in cali, where i beleive it is the stringiest. i didnt tell them that it was a 350, cuz they cant tell just by looking at, no one can. as long as you have EGR and o2, and all the other smog crap you should have no trouble passing. as far as the $ goes, i bought the standard GM 350 for around 1400 with a new flewplate and water pump. i added a performer intake(emmisions legal) and TES headers(also smog legal) for i think about 2k in parts.
