head vs. head

its time to get heads for the motor ive been buliding, i was reading an old issue of CHP or super chevy and they had a test on a 406 with stock gm vortec heads with a beefier spring and the motor produced like 525 ft lb and 420 hp with a dished piston and 9.5:1 compression. the pistons i got right now would produce 10.85:1 compression on any 64 cc head liek the vortec which i too much for pump gas i feel, i was wondering if there was a way to get the same ft lb and hp numbers out of a pro topline 215 or 220 ccintake and a 74cc combustion chamber where i would be looking arrould 9.75-10:1 compression which i would like.
my local engine shop said $850 for assembled pro toplines, ive seen them on ebay for 699. where would you suggest i get them from? thank you

I've seen them advertised inexpensively in many places. One of them is Competition Products, among others. The 72cc Pro Topline Iron Lightning heads are $824.95, assembled. By the time you pay for shipping 100+ pounds, you might as well get them from your local shop and have them built up exactly as you want.

If its torque (with modest hp) your after the select the smaller 180 or 200cc port heads. like the 170cc port vortecs.

The larger heads may hit that torque figure.
If so it will be at a much higher rpm.

The smaller 180 cc head flow plenty more than the vortecs
so the power will be there.
Just read and include the small details that went into producing those numbers.

The actual exhaust system on your car will have lots to do with the final " inthe car " results.

if you get a set of aluminum heads and get it tuned right then 10.85 on pump gas isnt unheard of....

my LT1/4 is 10.5...i dont expect any problems as far as detenation

i also agree with f-bird...get the 200 cc...that motor would make great torque...and 420 HP+

like vader said, by the time you pay for shipping and all the other "fees" youd be better of getting them locally...

thank you everyone for the advice, ill be making a stop to the engine shop soon to get the pro topline 200's. i was always under the impression that aluminum heads wernt for street use, plus they would be out of my price range and the gm vortecs arnt made in aluminum.
im very excited to get every all together and get it out on the road but im also very confused why some 406's make 520+ ft lb and some struggle to make 475 ft lb with a set of AFR heads, is it the difference in cams, i dont have my magazines with me right now so i cant look them up but i was still curious, once agian thanks

I was doing a search on Pro Topline, saw this thread...

Reason I'm replying is I think I saw in my last Jegs catalog, aluminum Vortec's.

I'll look through it again, see if I can get the pn.

lol...you don't think the Vendors have thier "ear to the board"?

Once an item becomes a buzz word, it's turn into free enterprise.

Ever notice all the vendors who sell the "infamous" LT1 cam from the early 70's? Like technology hasn't caught up yet
