More Heads questions..
OK, so i'm guessing by what i've read here so far is that if i put vortec heads on my 350 i'll need to get a new intake. Will it need to be a vortec intake or a specific intake for the TPI application as well?
I'd like to get some info on this ASAP as i want this car running good soon.
Anyone want to clue me in on any deals they know about for heads? I'm looking at spending at the most $500 for now.

www.sdpc2000.com makes a TPI base for the Vortec heads.
If you do a search at www.chevyhiperformance.com to see the dyno tests, you'll see they made "OK" HP numbers, but IMHO, not enough to justify the $400.00 price tag.
You'd be better off getting World S/R Torquers or something similar like Pro Toplines.
BTW, Here's the link for the $400 TPI base.http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?act...art&catid=1460

World S/R torqers will not make near the power of Vortecs
or protoplines without quite a bit of porting.

What do you need good credit for, your the doctor. Pay cash. Vortec heads will run you around $500 plus the $400 intake. This is probably the best bet for you if you are going to keep the stock cam or run a smallish >210 degree intake duration cam. If not get the AFR's and a stealth or mini ram and a bigger <220 intake duration cam.

well if i hadn't been screwed over, i'd be doing just that, but being unemployed and having someone rip me off for $500, i don't have the money to do that any more. So, i'm looking for the cheapest way to get the car back to at least it's original power level again

For what the vortechs and an intake cost, you can have a set of Pro Toplines or Darts. You can't even rebuild a set of stockers with the same parts for the price these guys are selling the PTs or the Darts these days. Unless you're able to do all the machine work yourself. Go look on ebay. I've dealt with dirttrack thunder, several times the past year. Their service and parts are top quality, and highly recomended.

And let's see, Vortec heads with upgraded springs thru Scoggin-Dickey for ~$650 Plus the $400 intake (not including the EGR kit if needed) is $1,050. The Vortecs still won't have 2.02/1.6 valves, screw in rocker studs, thicker decks, nor the (already mentioned) EGR passages. And they can be had for ~$760. That's $290 CHEAPER (for those that failed math in HS.)
And no, they won't make as much HP as "upgraded" Vortecs, but they still average a 30 HP increase over stock heads out of the box, PLUS they can be pocket ported for even more flow.
Try pocket porting a set of Vortecs and you run a serious chance of hindering the design (not the flow, because as we all know, Vortecs are NOT high flowing heads.) They're benefit is chamber design and intake runner height/angle. They still have the coherent exhaust flow problems that every other stock production GM heads have.
Don't get me wrong. I use Vortec heads. AAMOF, I have a pair on my '72 Camaro, as well as a pair of used ones waiting for mods and installation on a built 355 for my '92 RS. I also have access to machining tools, so the cost for me is advantageous. That doesn't mean it is for everyone else.
My next choice would be PT's but ONLY because of cost. IMO, they haven't been around long enough to build a solid reputation yet. I like to see products build at least a 5 yr rep before I get giddy for them.
But that's just me.
BTW, to the people who recommend Dart heads..... guess who World Products got their design from???

You have to look at this in a realistic way.
Your unemployed. Put the thing back together with the stock TPI heads. give em a little home porting job.
L-98 TPI cast heads respond well to home porting.
back cut the valvers and stick 'em back on.
You'll see a nice moderate gain in top end power.
To see a signifigent gain in overall power with a TPI system you have to replace every thing. heads Manifold, runners, Throttle body etc.
Put on Vortecs and vortec TPI intake and your still stuck with the small long TPI runners.
Put it back together and work on your economic situation.
Then go out and get a real Hi performacne induction SYSTEM.
There are many to choose from.
Vortec RamJET Mini ram stealth ram Super Ram.
Take your pick.

check the flow #s on S/R Torquers.....Then compare the #'s to the flow of #882 heads, dont jsut look at peak, compare the numbers on every level and remember the cam goes to every spot .100, .200, .300, .400 etc 2 times every time it moves the valve.......for example the a good place to see the true colors of a head is at .400 lift......
S/R Torquers and #882 POS heads flow very simular, and thats why I say they arent "performance heads"
S/R = Stock replacement not matter what you put after it, but in this situation seeing he is unemployed it might be a good choice to get a set of new castings!
Flow #'s on S/R Torquers

ok, will heads from a crate engine for a 93 caprice work?
I found an auction on ebay for some and it's in my price range and comes with a few extras.

They will work but I think those are the swirl port heads, if they are they will flow worse than the two heads above.

Seriously, I'm not "arguing" with what you're saying even on the destroking an engine. All I'm saying is it's not for everyone.
I to like to wind the **** out of engines. I would love to have a pair of AFR's.
What would be cool as hell would be to throw a pair of AFR 190's on a 327 with a Crane solid cam with a power band of 4500-7500 RPM. Top it off with a BG Race Demon carb, a Holley Contender SP/IM, and an MSD Digital 6 box.
Throw it in a 65 Nova with an M-22 4 spd and 4.10 gears with some 28" M/T Sportsmans, and WHOOO HOOO!!!!
But that's just me.
