ok i want to intsall a new cam and rockers etc...most say to use screw in studs...what are they and are they hard to install?

 

rocker studs, i'd say fairly easy to install

 

Thats what the rocker arms pivot on, and what you are putting the nut onto.

Actually, there is a 1/2 ball that the rocker arms sit on, but that is slid onto the stud.

And yes, screw-in studs are the weapon of choice here.

I would think changing to screw in studs would require removing the heads due to all the tapping required. If that is the case, might as well get the heads redone.

 

man that sux, i dont wanna do all that work, i just wanted a better cam, but they all say to use screw in studs and guide plates.

 

I am not saying that the job is to difficult. It's just that the old studs must be pulled out, the stud hole then has to be hand tapped. With the right tools it should be easy, but it makes so many metal chips that they could get down into the engine. If you don't want to get the heads redone, maybe just removing the heads, install the studs, then clean all the chips out with air before reinstalling the heads. If you are installing a cam, you have the top of the engine all apart already, all thats left is the exhaust manifolds. If you do this, maybe remove the studs before you remove the heads. better leverage cranking the studs out.

 

I thought studs were the guys that get all the chicks!!! But seriously, modifing heads for screw in studs is not for the novice, you can really screw up the heads if you don't do it correctly, it's best to use a BridgePort type milling machine to do it, I've done a few sets and there is more to it than just retapping the stud holes, the bosses need to milled flat first to a correct height.
