Question about non-A/C box vs. A/C box!

First off, my Iron Duke SC originally did not come with A/C. Some moron did a crappy job adding an aftermaket unit. Not sure what all he changed out. Anyhow, I ripped all that garbage out and through away, including some of the black box under the dash. I'd like to restore the car back to no A/C. I have a 83 Z parts car (with A/C) and was removing parts of the black box under the dash today. Alot of the pieces don't seem to match on the Iron Duke car. Is there any differences in no A/C vs. A/C boxes? Do I need a j/k visit to find one identical to mine? I'm talking about the box under the dash. I also have to rewire the heating pieces.

Thanks,
Brandon

A non-AC box may not have the bypass or temperature mixing damper set up the same as an AC box, and almost certainly does not have the interior recirculation damper. Being an aftermarket AC unit, however, really throws some wildcards into the question.

I'd agree with that. I removed the a/c from my 83, and replaced the controls with a non a/c controls and air box(under the hood). There are more air doors (or flaps) with an a/c car than with out. So what I had to do was to use the non a/c faceplate with the a/c controls, so everything would still work. I also used the a/c fan resistor instead of the 2 (or maybe 3 ) speed non a/c resistor. Since you had the a/c parts car, I would just swap it in the same way I did, using all of the a/c ducts. especially if the old box was cut up. Hope that gives you some ideas.

Being that it's aftermarket, really makes things more difficult. one thing he did was modify the original heating control box so much that the plugs on the back don't match the Z28 or my heater controls I bought from Ebay. I don't even know where to start on the wiring! I mean, I have to re-wire everything from the fuse box to the little illumination lite for the heater to work.

Looks like I need to remove everything under the hood to get the box out (from under the dash). Is that right? Thought about saying "SCREW IT!" and running without heating or A/C. But that defroster comes in handy sometimes.

I wish I would have known, I just unloaded a wiring harness from an 84 when I sent it to the scrapyard.

i took the a/c off my camaro, and went and bought a used heaterbox and blower motor, it seems now that the fan dont blow as much air now when i put it on defrost. I kept the controls that were on the car, does it matter or should i get a non a/c control switch?
