What points do you use to measure valve spring installed height? The bottom of the spring to the bottom of the retainer? Or do you measure from the surface of the head (spring pocket) to the bottom of the retainer????

The second one.

Then you add shims to gain the desired height if the one you measured is too much for what you want.

 

Ok, so........my suggested installed height is 1.750". That means I should end up with a measurement of 1.750" from the base of the valve spring to the bottom of the retainer?

 

Yea..... Measure from the spring pocket to the bottom of the retainer.
