What causes fuel odor?
I took my car to get some welding done, and the guy said he wouldn't do it because my car smelled too strongly of gasoline.
I didn't really notice it, but popped the hood when I got home, and I could smell a faint odor of gasoline.
Nothing is leaking that I can see. I've got a carb V8 LG4. Could it be that fuel vapor canister? The weather just turned bitter cold, and I put in some fuel additive/carb cleaning stuff last fill up.
Any ideas? I don't want to send the garage on a wild goose chase, but I want to get this welding done.
Thanks,
John

probably your plugs are firing a weak spark and not burning all the gas your carb is dumping, or your carb needs adjusted, but your burning rich...
how long since a plug/wire/cap swap?

I had it tuned up about a year ago.
The smell seems worst after I've driven the car hard for 30+ minutes in cold weather. I'm taking it to the garage tomorrow to have them check it out.
My car is an '86, and I've never done anything with that fuel vapor canister thing behind the headlight. Could that be causing it? Is there any maintenance I should be doing to that?

My gas oder turned out to be a bad gas cap. It was intermittent and took a long time to figure out. I don't know how the fumes can come forward while driving but they did. A new gas cap solved it though.
