Cost of Parts
Cost of Parts
I'm new to TBI and f-bodys so bear with me... but I need to know, Does anybody think new rings, bearings, all new seals and gaskets and new pistons for my 91 305 TBI would cost 300 bucks for just the parts? Sounds a little high to me...

depends on what you get, there is a wide range of prices for SBC parts. i've saw 150 or so for all the rings, bearings, gaskets.

With pistons in there, that is actually too low for anything good. The pistons should be in the $150-175 range by tehmselves for anything better than a rebuilder's cheap cast piece of crap.
A good set of rings like Speed-Pro plasma moly ones ar eabout $100; a full set of bearings is about $85; a full gasket set is about $50. If you shop around you can probably find a "kit" with an acceptable group of parts for about 10-15% less than the sum of the prices sparately.
DO NOT buy parts, or machine work for that matter, for an engine rebuild from the lowest bidder. That's the only thing about nuclear power that scares me: the plants are built by the low bid. You're going to spend probably 3 times the cost of parts on the labor; do you really want to put that much money at risk by cheaping out on the parts for a tiny percentage of savings on the job overall, and then face having to do it again that much sooner? I wouldn't.

Ok...you almost lost me with the nuclear power thing...but I hear what your saying and just to let you know, the labor is already paid for, he's already gonna have the engine apart to replace the valve seals, so the $300 is for parts only...

Wrong! You can replace valve seals without going any farther than taking off the valve covers. That doesn't include about 95% of the labor of a rebuild, which would necessitate pulling the motor, tearing it down, turning the crank, hot-tanking the parts, boring and honing the block, a valve job, etc. etc. etc. which are all part of a ring & bearing & new piston rebuild.
IMHO you need to run as far away from that deal as you can get. There's about $750 at a minimum of machine shop labor in a motor rebuild, plus somewhat more than that of pull & tar-down & rebuild & reinstall; valve seals can be done on that car in less than 3 hours from drive-in to drive-out. There's no comparison between the amount of labor involved. It sounds fishy to me at best, and maybe even an outright cheat.
