This is very vague I know, so I'm sorry.. heh

Somewhere on the block there's numbers... these numbers will tell you if it's a 305 or 350. As for the vortec heads I'm not sure..

Block numbers can be found at the back of the block between the top and second bell housing bolts on the drivers side.

Head casting numbers can be found under the valve cover. (you must remove the cover)

Get these numbers and go to www.mortec.com or post them here.

thanks for the info

I checked the head and block casting numbers and it shows them to be the vortec L31 heads and the Gen 1 crate motors 350 block. This is a crate engine and was made in 97. Does anyone have any info on this combination. It is a shortblock including oil pan, flywheel, vortec heads and the torsional damper. The valve covers are the standard black ones with center bolts. Im not sure if its 2 or 4 bolt mains, how would i check this?

Thanks, i hope someone knows something about this

Unfortunately, the only way to be absolutely sure it's a four or two bolt main is to pull the oil pan and take a look. Most crate replacement engines are usually a four bolt, but not always. If you check the block casting number at mortec.com, some block casting #'s will be listed as being either two or four bolt, then some will be listed as strictly two bolt or four bolt mains. The block casting # is your best guess without pulling the oil pan.
