Changing rear main seal on a Jeep, need some advice
Sorry, I know this isn't 3rd gen related but you guys are the best!
I'm changing the rear main seal on a friends 90 Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0 liter inline 6. I removed the oil pan and the bottom of the rear main seal, the hard part is the upper part. What kind of tool is best to get this out? I don't want to have to drop the crankshaft since the tranny is still attached to it and I don't want to have to unbolt all of those mains etc.. and create more things that could go wrong. Should I use some sort of brass punch or something? I don't want to mess up the crankshaft
I was trying to use a roofing nail like you see on gutters but it chipped so I have to clean those chips off the crankshaft before I do anything else. Are there any tips to getting this sucker out?
Thanks again

I thought those were 1 piece rear main seals ??
You chipped the crank?? If you chipped the crank where the seal rides you might as well pull the motor, it will still leak.
What I do is use a small plastic or brass punch and tap lightly on the seal while having someone rotate the engine the direction you are tapping.
STAY AWAY from the crankshaft!!

No, I didn't hit the crank at all, I was hitting the round metal part of the seal and the nail's head would chip because it was a really soft nail. The chips of nail sort of fell onto the crank surface, so I'll just go back with a toothpick and make sure it's ALL gone.
you need a packing puller to remove the seal. any place that deals with hydrolics should have one. otc, i think, makes a tool for crank in engine seal replacements. i believe it's called a sneaky pete or something like that. i'm sure snap on, mac, matco all should have something.

Okay, I got it out and the new one is in. Thank you again my thirdgen brothers. I don't know what I would do without this place.
