305 heads on 383 stroker???

I have the heads off my original tpi 305 and was wondering if they would be suitiable for a 383 after a little work. Doesn't sound like a good idea logically but was hoping to cut some corners

Thanks for any advice

They'd work, but there are a lot better alternatives. You'd make more power of spending the stroker money on good heads for a 355 IMO.

Scoggin-Dickey has Upgraded Vortec head kits which include assembled Vortec heads (featuring high performance Z28 valve springs with light weight LT4 retianers; good for about 0.550" lift with a hydraulic camshaft), head gaskets, head bolts, rocker arms, Performer RPM intake manifold, intake gaskets,12 point intake bolts and additionl required components as stated for $900.

That would be an inexpensive alternative to high dollar aluminum heads which would allow you to make substansially more power than your 305 heads.

What exactly are your plans for this engine?

you can use them but as stated its probably not worth it. you would have to do some porting, new (bigger) valves, etc to make them support a 383. the only thing they are good for at this point is raising compresson.

I'm not wanting any thing crazy just enough to bust the stangs around here. I gonna use my existing 305 tpi setup and burn a custom prom. Just trying to figure out the direction I need to go cam, injectors, heads, ect. It may see the strip once or twice.

So you have a roller cam block? How much power would you like to make? More importantly, how much money are you willing to spend?

I think it is a 90 model 350, a close friend of mine dad ownes a machine shop and he said I could get the block (I haven't accually seen it my self). I think he wants to trade for my 305 block because thats what all the dirt tracks around here run. Anyway, as far as power, in the 305's better days was pretty impressive, but after 5 years of my driving she developed a nasty knock. So I figure since I am going to rebuild I might as well build a stroker motor. I figure that I need to get a cam that makes peek power around 5500 rpm if I can get the tpi to coropoate. Get my heads or different ones fixed up and see what I get. It will have to have more power than the 305. I hope to spend around 1500, but expect to go around 2000 but not much more than that.

The 58cc chambers will raise your compression, but the small runner volume will choke the motor out of any decent kind of power.

You're better off just sucking it up and getting something better suited towards what you want to do IMHO.

Good luck
