Odd noise

Hi, my car has this strange humming noise when I have it turned on and in park, its even louder then the exhaust, however when I turn my car off it takes a few seconds for the noise to stop, what could this be?

Where is it coming from?

If you can't pinpoint it easily, take a piece of heater hose, and stick it in your ear (I just love telling people to do that!!!!) and use it like a stethoscope, just sort of probe around with the ither end and see if you can tell what's making it.

It's definitely coming from the rear somewhere, I originally thought it was an exhaust leak but I got that fixed up and the noise still persists.

OK; is it coming from just in front of the left tire and slightly toward the center of the car from there, sounds like something blowing its nose?

i beleive the noise RB is refering to is the fuel tank pressure control valve or pressure relief valve, as i have sometimes seen it.

Possibly the fuel pump on its way out.

Ok so its either the fuel pump or the fuel tank pressure control valve? Are these parts expensive to buy? Would I need some one to install them or could I do it myself?

What engine do you have? 305 carb? 305/350 TPI/TBI?
