How do you know its the mech. fuel pump that is making that noise? have you, per RB's favorite suggestion, stuck a piece of heater hose in your ear and listened to it and confirmed that it is indeed the pump?

Well, if you are certain thats what it is, i would just go to the parts store and ask for a replacement. I think delco makes a pump.
What part of the pump is it coming from?

It's seems to be coming from the top, but I could be wrong...never had one make this noise before. I thought it was going to be the timing chain but the noise is coming from the pump. I would much rather replace the fuel pump though!!!

Most likely the spring has taken a set so it isn't as long as it should be. No reason to think it is going to "tear up soon", although it might be marginal at higher RPMs.
I had a brand new pump make noise. The engine sounded like an Olds diesel. It was a bad spring.
