new motor dont like to start when advanced

305 HO around 10:1 compression and when the motor is advance enough to make this car run great and has plenty of ponies it wont start again when shut off. When the is retarded it starts up great and has no nuts. It bogs and crap. I think its 4* advanced right now, no nuts and diesels. The hottest she runs is 220* I have I have a 725 cfm demon jr was thinking of rejetting it with the 64 jets i bought because i think the timing and carb are fighting and making this engine run crappy. I bought a breand new starter thinkiong the old one was getting heat soaked but didnt really help. Any help would be appreciated

Sounds like teh timing is overadvanced. Ive done the same thing and the motor wont start and sometimes detonates real bad when it does. Is the dist. advacing the timing properly?

Sounds like you have the POS stock starter.

Get a better starter. I have the CVR mini-starter, works great on a 400; others report good results with the cheap Summit brand one, the LT1 starter, etc. Just about anything with gear reduction is better than the old Delco-Remy direct-drive one.

From: out of my mind; be back in 5 minutes....
Car: 1989 Firebird Formula
Engine: Internal Combustion
Transmission: Completed
Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
Another option would be to wire in an ignition cutout switch into the hot lead of the coil. Flip it off before you start to crank the engine over; then when it's turning freely, flip it back on to fire it up.
Also works great if you experience a 'hot start' condition.
