Starting problems !!!

Everytime I try starting my car, it sounds like something is loose and then the car turns over. Then sometimes the car just doesn't start at all. I wait there trying it, you can hear a clicking sound but that is it. If I leave it for a little bit, and try again, 7 out of 10 times it will start then. What could this be ???
Thanks guys/gals

John

Sounds as if your starter may be loose. Have someone crank the car while you look at the starter. It could be "jumping" around. It could also be a loose starter solenoid or loose connections at the solenoid.

However, I would guess the bolts are backing out that hold the starter to the block or the aluminum end on the starter has cracked or broke completely.

Another possibility is a cracked flywheel but I have seen several "broken" starters.

Ok thanks for your input JMS, I was playing with the starter today and noticed that the solenoid was a little loose. I was actually able to wiggle it slighty. I hope that is the problem.
