Which head would be best for me?
Which head would be best for me?
I'm looking for new set of heads for my IROC. I was planning to change the cam and use vortec heads but now I'm thinking that wouldn't be my best route. Please check my sig for my current list of components and recomend what you think would be the best for my car. I would prefer iron heads for durability but would buy the edelbrocks, which are heli-coiled out of the box, if they'll produce the best power with my single pattern cam.
Thanks for any input!

Thanks Bort62, but I've read that about hundred times already.
Actually, I would love to have a set of AFR heads but I would hate to have to pull them for repairs after a year of tightening header bolts and changing spark plugs. I already have a stripped hole in my aluminum intake so I'm just not comfortable with aluminum heads.
Simply, I want an iron head that, with my existing cam, will perform at least as well as the Vortecs would when paired with an Extreme Energy 268 and 1.6 rockers. If this head doesn't exist then I will change the cam and get the Vortecs.
More suggestions? Thanks!

AFR's will work great. The taps in the heads are iron not aluminum. They will not strip.

You can Heli-coil all the threads in a pair of heads for less than $15 worth of inserts. I wouldn't let that stand in the way of choosing the most appropriate head.
Also, a cam is like $100, a set of heads is like $1000... which one should you pick first and then match the other to? hmmmmm....
Single-pattern cams are an outdated design. Nearly all SBC heads flow better on the intake side than the exhaust side; the purpose of using a dual pattern cam is to hold the exhaust open longer so that the total flow through that side more nearly matched the flow through the intake side. Remember, you can't get more in, unless you get out what's already there.
You might want to consider a set of GM Fast Burns and the RPM intake to match... less $$$ than the AFRs, good flow (much better than the Edelbrock), reputable mfr.

Wow, three more recomendations for the AFR's. I guess it took 103 times for me to hear. lol
I'm going to call AFR and see what they can do for me. Money isn't a problem, I'm not rich but It's easy enough to save for an extra month if I need to.
Oh, and I know all that about cams, just since I already have it, I might as well use it.
Thanks a lot guys!
