EGR not functioning ... is this a problem??

I have a 91 350tpi & the EGR is not functioning.
Is it just for emission purposes in which case I won't worry about it for the time being or is it going to cause internal engine damage??
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Whether EGR functions or not, it should not affect any internal engine component. It may impact driveability if it is recirculating exhaust all the time. Some people install a block off plate and reprogram their computers to remove it from their engines.
