What HEI ignitoin should i get?

i want to get a HEI ignition to replace my old one (hey if u gotta do routine mantinace might as well throw in a few performance parts while at it )

i want accel or MSD but idk which one will fit.

and one that would fit a 350 and my lo3 305 at the same time would be great (future project).

Distributors "fit" the same whether the engine is 305 or 350 (or 262 or 265 or 283 or 307 or 327 or 400 or 396 or 426 or 454 - I probably missed a few in there).

What you need to know is whether you are going with a computer controlled system (like the TBI that came from the factory), or non-computer controlled such as would be used with a non-concomputer controlled carb.

Or, were you talking about an aftermarket box to improve spark? (Same answer, though.)

What he said. You know your car has an HEI unit in it already right? Are you looking for an MSD billet crank or spark box? We need to know exactly what it is you are trying to figure out.

What's wrong with what you've got?

Are you talking about a stock computer controlled type, or something without computer controls?

Whats wrong with using a GM unit? If its working properly and set up right, there in really no HP to be gained by spending 10x the money on aftermarket stuff.

Just get the right springs (leave the weights alone) and maybe a coil with a little more kick, and its gonna make just as much power as any $1000000 aftermarket HEI will.

(I assumed you wanted a non-CC distributor here)

You can't just replace the distributor to a non-computer controlled distributor. If your not going to get rid of the computer and all the computer controlled stuff, you can't get a different distributor. There is nothing wrong with the on in the car now is there? Probably not! All you need is a new distributor cap and rotor, some wire and some spark plugs to tune up the ignition system.

Borsty, yes the distributor you have is already an HEI. You can rebuild it if you need to, I'm pretty sure that has been covered before. If you are looking for an aftermarket unit for some reason, most aftermarket distributors sell them.

Not completely true.

But then, the question "What's wrong with yours?" still needs to be answered to justify that expense.

It doesn't include the coil, which is a weak point of the stock ignition.

a cap is the plastic part with the 8 things pointing out of it with caps on the end of the dist. and the rotor is the part on the inside which spins and gives spark to a different wire at a different time.

hope that made sense.
