406 heads on a budget
ok i'm swapping a small block 406 into my originally L03 formula and after the neccesary rear end and trans building, exhaust, and cooling upgrades that doesnt leave me much room to modify the 406 but i dont want to run the rebuilt 882 heads that are on the car...granted i could get better springs and a big cam but from what i've heard the 882 heads flow like sh*t no matter what so back to the question...i need decent heads for a .510-.520 duration cam for a decent price...im not going for an all out drag car but i want some decent flowing heads...any ideas? id like to spend around 500 bucks or less

Competition proucts / Pro topline Vortec heads.
These heads will out flow your smog 882s and the springs are good for up to .510" lift.

Agreed go with Aftermarket heads. THe PRO vortecs are performance vortecs out of the box, far superior to the GM vortec IMHO.

if they are going on a 400 based block, i believe they need steam holes drilled. Not that thats hard, but just something to look at.

Pick up drill.
Put bit in drill.
Turn head upside down.
......
I think you get the picture.
It's 6 3/16" or so holes (size is absolutely not critical) drilled through the deck. Use a head gasket as a template and mark them with a center punch.
So easy I can even so it, usually without screwing anything up much.
{edit} That's 6 holes per head. Sorry if I made it sound too easy.

Watch your compression with the 64cc chambers and the bigger 400sbc bore. With 4 valve relief flattops 10.5 would be easy and not good for a cast iron head. Dish pistons would be ok though. Going through the same thing now
