it might not be a big deal but i just bought an 89 RS V8 305 TBI auto. when i put it in reverse and dont give it much gas it turns off sometimes.

 

It might not be a big deal if you don't care, but it isn't right.

I'd suggest you start by assessing the entire thing. Verify a good ignition system, clean fluids at the correct levels, and clean filters. You should also inspect the vacuum hoses, cooling system hoses, radiator cap, belt, and don't overlook the brakes and wheel bearings.

Basically, you need to treat the vehicle like it has been neglected, abused, and ignored, and perform all the required maintenance for a vehicle of that age and mileage. Unless you know the previous owner and are certain that all maintenance has been kept current, don't assume anything.

For the stalling in gear, yYou might also want to clean the throttle body, IAC air passages, PCV valve, injector tips. Make sure the TPS is set correctly, and check the throttle minimum air position. That should solve it.

 

thnx sounds right because previous owner who bought it from owner before never drove it. he was towing it around on his tow truck. I plan on doing a full tune up in about two weeks.
