distributor problems

i have an 84 z28 camaro with a 305. I got the car from my brother and he took out all the ac crap and the brain for my car. I replaced the carb with an edelbrock 600cfm. that made it run better. but the distributor thats on it now isn't a vacuum advance distributor. how much of a difference will it make if i put a vacuum advance distributor on it? will i get better gas mileage? It looks like it would be a tight fit on gettin the distributor out and putting the new one in. I wouldn't have to pull the engine would i? Also what would be a good inexpensive distributor to get if I have to change the one I have in it now? Thanks for all the help in advanced

If your car has a non-cc carb (which it does) it needs a non-cc distributor, aka- vacuum advance. For about $152, Mallory has a HEI setup with coil. I have one, it's a pretty decent piece. It comes with an assortent of advance springs so you can adjust the rate that the advance kicks in.

no you dont have to pull the engine to get the distributor out of the car just take the wires and cap off and loosten the hold down bolt and remove it and the hold down clamp then pull the distributor but remember to mark the rotors location so you dont have a very hard time putting it back in the correct position
