Blown up engine?

I paid 2Gs' for a short block three yrs ago. I had the block splayed, hyperutectic pistons, and stage 2 chevy rods. I was told i had the stock steel forged crank, however, the crank broke right behind the key of the timming chain??? The crank was obviously not forged!!!! Now, I am wondering if the rod's are chevy stage 2 rods. How will i be able to tell if they are infact chevy stage 2 rods? Will a machine shop be able to tell? I just purchased an Eagle 4340 crank shaft and will end up purchasin the 4340 I beam rods if I do not have the chevy stage 2 rods. I am hoping that I do have the stage 2 rods, I really don't want to spend another small mint to fix my Z,however, I will do it if need be

So any hele in Identifing the rods will be greatly appricated!

Yes a machine shop would be able to tell ...and so could you if you pulled the oil pan and looked.

$2000 for a shortblock with those parts? Seems pretty high to me in the first place... Anyway, even forged stuff breaks, everything has the chance of being flawed or abused too much. One a second note... whats the point in buying expensive 4340 rods and crank and then keeping the crappy hyper pistons?

On a budget, only 12K miles on the engine. The hyper pistons are the heat treated more better type of the hyper's. Anyway, the engine was balanced, spayed 2 bolt main, H series bearings.......yada.......

Anyway, I need to make sure the rods are stage 2! HOW????
