Hood coule/cowl? question

so which is it cowl or coule, but the real question is... i have an 84 trans am with a functional coule. has a motor to open and close it, was just wondering what determines whether its open or closed. havent found a switch or anything inside. thanks ahead of time. also from looking on here seemed like the knock i had comeing from the engine was rod bearing or bearing surface. i pulled off the valve cover on the side of the knock and the previous owner had pulled them at one time and replaced em with a liquid spread on gasket ****, which was only paper thin, vs the 1/4 inch rubber gaskets i bought. so the rocker arms were hitting the valve cover. i havent got it all back together yet but im hopeing thats all the knock was and not something more serious. will see.

Cowl. The flapper is controlled by the computer. I don't remember all the things the computer checks, but it's stuff like warm engine, throttle position, trans gear, etc etc. I modified mine to be controlled by me and not the computer. The "how-I-did-it" is on my website (link below).
