what exactly broke
i blew my engine a while back and am finally fiing it. im just looking for an idea of exactly what broke. with all the accesories off the front of the motor, you can move the crank pully up and down a good 3/4 to an inch up and down. do you think that i crakced my crank or did i severely spin the crank bearings? this is my only guess, any other ideas on what could have happened?

1.5" is a LOT of motion for the crank pulley to go through, I doubt the bearings could give that much freeplay. Unless you actually cracked the crank just in front of the main caps, I don't think theres enough give in the main caps to allow 1.5" of play.
I would say inspect the 3 bolts that hold the pulley to the balancer's inner hub. Work your way from there. Balancer, then the crank snout. (Basically, when you move the pulley, does the balancer move with it?)

yep, i took the pulley off and it still does it. im saying like 3/4 to an inch of total range covered by the up and down motion though.not 1.5 up and 1.5 down. i gotta find the balancer puller to get that off next. il be real pissed if that could be all it is, but i doubt it. thanks

Sounds to me like the crank broke; probably right at the front of the #1 rod journal.
Not like it really matters at this point: you'll have to tear it down to fix it anyway, so it doesn't much matter what's broke, you'll be finding it out soon enough anyway.
