cooling problem after tempswitch swap
cooling problem after tempswitch swap
my LB9 has the duel fans. i changed the sensor on th eblock to the jey one that has a 200on 180 off. i am also running a 180 thermostat and i have the tranny on a cooler
for some reason once the fans come on they dont wanna go off EVER. if i am doing 70 crusing they will go off but if i let it idle they stay on and wont go off. the temp of the engine comes down alot but fans dont go off. could it be the 180 thermostat is closing to early? if so maby a 170 would do me better is 170 thermo and the fans on at 200 bad? also am i gonna reach closed loop when crusing on the highway? with a 170 especially in the winter? could i be my coolant? its mostly water right now. about 65/35 (65% water)
thanks

What is your operating temp? Highway vs. In-town? I am running a 160 stat with edelbrock water pump and my temp will hit 210-220 occasionally on hot days in traffic. My mix is 50/50 antifreeze coolant.
Also, shouldnt you have at least 50% antifreeze? The only reason I add that into the mix (no pun intended) is that it may affect how fast (or slow) the coolant temperature changes. (i.e. specific heat of the coolant)
FYI: specific heat = amount of heat needed to raise 1 g of a substance by 1*C. Higher SH means more heat is needed to raise the temperature of the mixture. For a radiator, this translates into how long it takes to heat up, or cool down the mixture. The only thing is, im not sure how adding antifreeze to water changes the SH. (by definition, water has a SH of 1.0)
As an example, aluminum has a very low SH. It gets hot fast, and cools quickly as well. Notice this next time you take super-hot aluminum foil off a baked potato. The foil will cool down to room temp almost immediately.
Had enough of this chemistry lesson?

I have the jet switch also in my car with a 180 thermo and no real problems. The switch is 200on and 185 off not 180. So you shouldn't have a problem with the fans not turning off although it does take a while to come down to temp at idol. I borrowed a lazer thermometer from a friend and found mine is comming on at 204-206 and off at 183-185.
I just installed the JET fan switch two days ago......and i dont have that problem......but now my temp. gauge doesnt work at all.....any ideas on what i can do to fix that?

Wait, IIRC, the Spf for Water was 4.6 Or something....
Or is that 4.6 Joules to Raise 1 gram 1 Degree C, but yeah, that would be 4.6....
Hmm, I cant seem to find My damn AP chemestry book from the HS days.
lots of Calculus, and Physics, but No Chem ;(
