Closed loop with new thermostat

I've read how many of you have switched your thermostat to a 160* or 180* in an effort to cool your cars better. Doesn't this "fool" the car's computer and not allow itself to go into closed loop operation? If the computer thinks that the operating temperature should be so that the thermostat fully opens at 195*, and the lower temp thermostat is installed, what does it mess up?

I think the computer needs to see 160* before it goes into closed loop.. I'm not positive though. For non computer-controlled cars this isn't really an issue. However, you'll generally get better fuel economy if your car goes into closed-loop mode.

Now, you can easily modify the computer chip to suit whatever thermostat you put in.

However if everything on your car is stock, and you put a 160* t-stat in, you'll likely run into several drivability issues.

You'll want to get Hyepertechs Thermomaster chip. It is specifically programed for low temp stats. Trust me on this one.

Actually, the ECM can enter closed-loop mode at 104°F, but there are many other temperature-specific functiions controlled by the ECM, some of which do not get enabled until 176°F is reached. Thsi, of course, is with a stock EPROM.

I have a Stage 2 Jet Chip and was getting around 15-16 MPG with a 160. With the 180 I have now I'm getting around 20-23 depending upon my driving. That 20 is half highway, half foot to the floor city driving.
