code 33 AND black smoke...help pleez
ok, i just installed hooker 1 3/4 long tubes on my 305 TBI, and the 3" y pipe from mufflex. the o2 sensor is old and i have a new one but i was told i needed a heated one since it is farther back (on the y pipe) so im not gonna use the new one, but rather exchange it for a heated one.
the positive battery terminal melted off so i connect it to start it and then it just sits there, and teh car runs off of the alternator.
question is....the car has no back pressure obviously (running open Y pipe right now) and it runns like crap in ?closed loop?, only when i really get on it.
it runns fine at idle and low rpms, but uses a lot of gas, but if i touch the pedal too much it back fires and chokes and tries to die. it is also throwing a code 33. someone told me its puffing black smoke, meaning im running rich....
when i start the car it chokes and doesnt wanna idle unless i keep my foot on the gas a lil bit, then it will hit ?closed loop? and idle fine!
pleez help.
will my problems be fixed with a new o2 sensor, with cat back hooked up?
thank you all
edit: code 33 = High voltage (low vacuum) at mass air flow sensor (or MAP sensor)...do TBIs have either of these????
edit: VADER>>>> i AM running a O2 sensor, just the OLD one. it looks ugly, brown, but i THINK its functional. where is the MAP sensor on my car? and what is causing the HIGH VOLTAGE/LOW VACCUM???

BB,
Your MAP sensor isn't at all happy with the vacuum, and that may be affected by the lack of an O2 sensor. The mixture will tend to be very rich (about 12.5:1 instead of 14.7:1) and will remain that way until you get a functional oxygen sensor installed.
You may have also toasted the MAP sensor with one of those backfires...

ok...where is this TPS and MAP. i know what they are etc, just not where...ill check chiltons
i got a new batt cable though.
someone told me the low vaccuum was cuz of the open pipes, and once i put on the rest of the exhaust itll run fine....true or not?
thanks a million

First of all you need some back pressure for the car to run right. The TPS is going to be at the front of the tune port if you have a TPI,on the throttle body just oppisite side of throttle it will be black plastic w/a plug in it,if it is TBI I don't know where it is.Now as far as the backfiring when you let off the gas is also because you are running open pipe. What year is your car,you could have a MAF and not a MAP sensor. You might wanna check your timing, that could cause the backfiring.

let me get this straight
i have a 90 TBI, MAP.
car ran like a dream before i put on the headers.
i know i need back pressure, but it seems like it wont get better with it on...but we'll see, i need to get a couple more pieces to finish my exhaust.
i hope it DOES fix the problem, but somehow, i doubt it, but you never know.
it only causes trouble when it uses the sensors. (start up, and intermittently while driving) (otherwise it runs fine, but wastes LOTS of gas)(but then again it wastes gas while using the sensors...cuz it runs rich)
we'll see. PLease keep the ideas comin....Thank you
are we all in agreement that it is probably the back pressure, MAP and/or TPS?
could it be my ghetto rigged knock sensor? if i hit a hard bump, it goes into the sucky running mode for a minute.
could the low voltage at the MAP be from not using the battery? (terminal wont stay on)

I just had a code 33 and 36 and it has to do with the MAF,i looked everything over and found a wire had came off under the MAF,i plugged it back in and voila!,problem solved,
check for lose wires,it might be that simple.

If it aint a V-8 that $hit aint fast!,unless its a GN,lol!
305 tpi,700r-4 with shift kit,My mods are minimal, just a bunch of little $hit.Anyone know where to get underdrive pulleys for a v-belt set up?
