my timing, plz Help!!!

OK well since i was getting really bad gas millage and a stuter when going about 45-60 mph, i was told to check my timing. so i did. when i checked, my timing was so far advanced that it wasnt even in the notches, so i adjusted 2degress everytime untill i got to about 4 degrees, which i thought was good, but then when i got to really take her out for a while on the road, i found that their is some hesitiation, and it seems like their is some gas coming out of the exhaust, which i never noticed before, only when i adjusted the timing. my question is, do i need to advance it alittle more? or could there be another problem i havent considered yet? thanks alot!

There should be a label under your hood that tells how to set timing and what to set it at. That's a good place to start, but you can change it from there to suit your car. The gas coming out of your tail pipe sounds like a different problem.

Your car has a feedback carb right? If so check the float level and mixture control solinoid. Other areas to check are ignition( pull your spark plugs, are they fouled? Are your vacuum hoses hooked up right? If your car has a fuel pressure regulator with a vacuum hose attached to it, it's possible that the diaphram is leaking causing it to suck fuel into the intake manifold.
