catalitic converter question

i have a problem that is worse when it is cold. and being in wisconsin its real cold. when i first start driving even after 5 to 10 min warm up the car likes to almost stall. but once it gets moving it does not act like anything unless i try to jump on. my car runs real rich so that is what is leading me to a clogged converter. i checked my tps it is reading .638. i know that is outside specs but it was outside spec before it started acting up. the car likes to act like is going to stall but doesn't. or you could say it is falling on its face. any ideas? thanks

Two ways top check for a clogged cat/restricted exhaust...

1. Remove the O2 sensor and install a low-ish pressure gauge...backpressure at 3000RPM should be less than 2PSI.

or

2. Use a vacuum gauge at intake vacuum and check at idle, reading at 300RPM should meet or exceed idle vacuum reading..if lower.

PSI is probably more concrete, since vacuum (idle anyways) can be affected by cam, timing, engine issues, etc...but pressure out of the engine is always concrete.

FWIW, when I had manifolds and stock cat on my '89, backpressure flucuated between .75-1 PSI on my gauge.
