mat sensor question

what is it?..what does it do? where is it located on an 89 305 tbi?[thanks]

The MAT or IAT sensor is located in your air cleaner assembly. You will be able to tell it from the THERMAC switch because it won't have vacuum hoses going to it, it will have a 2-wire connector on the bottom. On the inside of the air cleaner the sensor will have 4 black points with a silver disk in the middle.

This sensor provides information on the temperature of the air coming into the engine to the ECM.

Transmission: 700R4
Using this info it passes to the ECM it delays the EGR from engaging until temp reaches 104 degrees F. On the 2.8L it retards timing slightly during high temp operations as well as compensates MAF settings.
