Odd Noises from Engine!!!! HELP!!!!
I started to notice a couple of days ago, a sound coming from my engine, not metal on metal, but more of the noise that 2 marbles make when you hit them together. I went for a drive and when I came back I had some interior car audio work that I had to do, so I left it outside of the garage. After working on it (about 3 hours), I started it to put it in the garage and noticed that the engine was almost dying and there was now another knocking sound coming from the engine (louder than the first sound). Never before has my car had problems in idle (like it was about to stall) and these knocking sounds are not exactly what I want to hear. Any ideas what could be causing them??

I almost forgot to mention that I just had the top half of the engine rebuilt. Due to some overheating issues the heads were taken off, rebuilt and machined. Thought I'd mention that if it might help.

Could be a few things:
#1 Water pump
#2 timing chain.
#3 another accesory
#4 a bearing in the motor.
My 'marbles in the engine' sound was simply a water pump. With the engine off, gasp both sides of the waterpump pully and try to rock it back and forth, if it wobbles at all you're bearings are shot, and thats your sound. You can also look at it while it's running and if you see any accesive play in it, its shot. Take belts off or use a mechanics stethoscope (or ear) to check the other accesorries. If it's not an acessory, go hook up your timing light, if the marks jump around at all, it's the chain that is slapping against the cover, it'll make a similar noise. You'll need a new chain, tensioner, and probably a new cover. I doubt it's an internal part, but if it gets that far, you're on your own.
Good luck.
