Check your connector to the maf. If the sockets(5) are expanded change it. Swap your maf and burnoff relays and see if you get another code. Be sure and clear the ecm when you do this. If you get code 36 your burnoff relay is bad. Replace it. First place to look is your connector though.

Code 44 ... Lean Exhaust... caused by most likely a vacuum leak.

Check all plastic vacuum lines for connection and that they aren't cracked.

Change O2 sensor and check wire to make sure it's not melted to the exhaust.

Fuel Filter.

Make sure intake manifold bolts are tightened to torque specs. Especially the middle 4.

Check connections after the MAF for air leaks. MAF to Air box to Bellows to TB.

Make sure plastic air box is not cracked. They are bad about cracking right on the seam which is hard to detect.

Long shots:

Plugged Cat or Muffler
Air Diverter Valve malfunction.
Cold start valve leaking air (o-rings)
Injectors leaking air (o-rings)
Bad ECM (unlikely)
Bad PROM (unlikely)

I had the same problem... it was the O2 sensor.. i did a complete diagnosis on the MAF and found nothing... I then realized that my O2 sensor could wiggle around.. replaced it with a bosch o2 sensor and my codes are gone and i am getting about 5 more mpg... whoo hoo

I had the same thing, except no code 33...SE light kept coming on, code 44 was set.

I monitored the O2 voltage and it would dive down to 10-15mv. Did the diag in the Helms, which states "unplug MAF and see if O2 voltage returns to normal" or similar, it did, idle smoothed out.

I was able to borrow a known good MAF to test it out with, and all was well.

$254.00 later for a new Bosch MAF, been fine ever since.

Rebuilt Bosch MAF runs 139.00 ~ 1 year warranty under the name A1-Cardone if you don't want to sport for a new one.
