How to identify engine

Okay, so I finally wound up getting my project car. It's a 1984 Z28. It's in pretty rough shape, but I didn't pay all that much for it either. I'm hoping to really make it nice, but in the meantime, I need some help. The guy that I bought it from said that the engine had been replaced but he wasn't sure whether it had been replaced with the regular carburated 305 or the high output version. Is there a way that I can tell by looking at the engine? I didn't really care which engine it had in it when I bought it as I plan on swapping it out eventually but I would like to know in case I have to buy parts for it before the swap. Any help you guys could offer would be great. I look forward to talking to everyone.

The difference in the regular and the HO motor is the heads and the cam. Run the casting #'s on the heads and hopefully that will tell you.

But for 95% of the parts that you might need between now and the time you swap it won't matter. They will be the same.

You can't tell from the casting number. You can only tell from the suffix codes.

Also the heads are the exact same either 416's or 601's. The only engine differences are the pistons, cam, and timing curve.

The H.O. would have the dual snorkel intake, that would be a good sign right there.... but a 305 in this case.

If the engine's been swapped though, that doesn't necessarily mean the HO air cleaner was added in as well.
