There's really no need to remove it unless you're looking to drop weight for racing, or gain clearance for headers. The defroster uses the AC to dehumidify the air it pumps across the windshield, making it much more effective.
The compressor is easy to ditch, but you'll need some sort of block-off plate or the whole set-up from a non-AC car (blower motor, heater core, housing) if you chose to remove the housing from the firewall.

Keep it man! You never know when you might want it. It won't hurt much to have it there even if you don't have it working. Hey even if it takes you a year to get it fixed right, at least it is still there.

Get a r134 retro fit kit and a bottle of stop leak & o ring conditioner and charge it up. You will use AC once you try it.
Besides it will help you to resell the car if you ever have to "God forbid".

go with the retrofit kit. I don't use mine I like windows down, even in the winter...but I do like having the a/c on when it's raining. I like to keep it cool inside and not wet...keep it.

Does the car have T-tops? Mine did and my A/C didn't work. So I decided to drop it to unclutter my packed engine bay. I've found that there are a good maybe 7-10 days out of the entire year which I would want to use it and not take off the T-tops. It was worth while for me to get rid of the parasitic loss, weight, and space that the A/C took up. But hey, some guys gotta keep cool, so I guess its up to you and how cold you like your car. However if you don't have T-tops, keep the A/C cause your going to fry in the summer.
