Since I like to stir up trouble...
Latest Hot Rod magazine - article on long stroke/small bore/long rod vs. short stroke/large bore/short rod engines. They built two BBC shortblocks of ~490 CID, tested using same heads/cam/intake, with two different cam/intake combos.
The typical assumptions didn't quite pan out. They both made about the same torque & power, although obviously neither combo was "optimized" for the stroke/bore combo being used (which they addressed in the article). And, the short stroke may have been handicapped by the short (stock length, actually) rods.
Anyway, worth the rack price if you don't happen to subscribe.
(Oh, don't read farther if you don't want me to give away the ending.)
(They concluded large bore is generally better, but as usual, "There's no replacement for displacement." - Assuming NA, of course...
)
