I did a master rebuild kit, new drum, and bought a new "super pump" instead of trying to build up the old one. I finished the shift kit and got a Vette 2050 stall converter. It should work out real nice. I hope to get my heads back tuesday, I am having bigger intake valves put in.

Well, I'm glad I caught this thread before the mods have a field day.

Looks nice. I can also say that color of that car the engine is sitting next to looks mighty fine too.

good old gm blue 500F hi temp paint from advanced auto, I forget the brand name, I will have to look at the can. It is supposed to be the same color as the early 80s blocks in 3rdgens. Oh yeah, I do have a question....
The flexplate for my 84 305 is smaller than one for a 84 305 chevy van, and the starter is a little different. The both were lg4 blocks and had a 700r4 transmission. Whats the deal?

I had a new 305 van flexplate leftover that I was planning on using.

Your 84 f-body flexplate and starter should have less teeth, thus why it's smaller than the Van's... I'm not sure if a van bellhousing will fit in a f-body though, I think I read something about the f-body needing a very small bellhousing to fit under the car.

Something to look up I guess.

... btw why would the mods have a field day w/ this topic?

The 700r4 transmission is a direct bolt up to both 305's it kinda looks like the same size I think, it was even the same length, the only difference is the style of tailshaft. I decided to go with the flexplate size that the TA came with. I would investigate further in hopes of a better balance, but I cant imagine why the bigger one would be much better.

I would have done some unshrouding on the cylinder head chambers when those big valves were installed, looks like that's going to hurt the flow some.

I sure hope not.

My new cam gives .449 .456 lift so I didnt think that would be enough for shrouding.

That's even worse that you have a small cam, shrouding will be worse at low lift because the valve can't get away from the edge of the chamber at low lift. Look at this pic of a head that has had the valves unshrouded and you will see what I'm talking about, then look at your head.

Hmm, the machine shop did remove some chamber material around the side of the valve, I just thought they were sloppy while cutting the bigger seats. Did they do this to deshroud it? or just for clearance?
