Heres the skinny on this puppy lol. Its a friends car the car sat at my job for a long time. He purchased it and has been driving it and bringing it up to spec.
He was dricing to work and the car shut down and would not start. He said He got it home and it would start but shake and as soon as he touched the gas it woulod stall. So while he had it at home he did a tune up changed the wires, plugs, cap, and ignition module. He said he got 6 plugs and wires and started it. It rqan okay but couldn't rev it up high. He had to move it, while he was doing that he revved the engine and shut it down. Changed the last two plugs and wires and the car wouldn't start.
We ran it on a computer and found that the maf sensor was bad. My thoughts at this point are either the module fu**ked up already or maybe the computer was running the car in a safe mode because the maf was bad.
My question could the maf sensor fail and cause the car not to start?????
I have not had a chance to look at the car so I can only go by what he tells me. We believe there is fuel pressure....... But he has to check at the rail while cranking.................
Any help is appreciated
Kenny

If the MAF has a problem, the ECM will operate the engine in Backup Fuel & Spark Mode. That is usually very rich, allows very little or no spark advance, and does not adjust well for added load when the throttle is opened. MAF Backup Mode is not as robust as Speed/Density BFSM.
Before you drop any cash on a replacement MAF, diagnose the problem first. It could be as little as a loose or cracked intake dust, misadjusted TPS, poor connections, a failing $8.00 MAF power or burnoff relay, or a $400 MAF sensor. Instead of a computer, use a paper clip in the ALDL next time. IT's much faster. Determine which MAF error code you have, then diagnose from there. There is more than one MAF error code for different failures of the MAF system, and many failures are not due to a bad MAF itself.
