How much would i expect to pay on install?
I think i'm going to order a set of headers fairly soon w/ money coming from work and a recent bday. My question is since i'm not mechanically enclined enough, how much would i be looking to spend to have my local mechanic put them on? I know it can get expensive but i'd rather have someone who knows what they're doing put em on. Also, i'm leaning towards getting some headman headers, but anyone else have suggestions on what else to get? Gracias

I would say you would pay at least $500 in labor if not more. If you have the money get SLP headers, I'm not sure if headman headers are coated, but if they're not I would suggest coating them.

I'd guess at least 8 hours labor at a place that does the install on a routine basis.
Here's my suggestion, call a few performance shops in the area and ask for a labor estimate, then post again and see if any fellow 3rdgenners want to make a few bucks and help you out.

Eh.....500 or so dollars is a lot............arrggg...I need something else to do to my car, w/ my hood and all the filter setup, it actually sounds meaner w/ all the air sucking in and whatnot. Actually, a couple of minutes ago i was reading about gears and whatnot and was wonderin...maybe i should invest in some gears? 3.42 sounds about what everyone around here has......i am curious tho...and this may be the dumbest question...but everyone mentions the 700r4 i believe it is...is that the trans in our cars or is that like aftermarket? sorry if that sounds dumb as hell, but trans are my specialty. But gears would be good, alittle something to bump up my off the line.....

Took my shop a little over and hour and a half...they charged me $100. what freakin shop are u going to that charges $500?????
If it takes a shop 8 hrs to install headers in a thirdgen they should be in a differet business...

I paid $200 for my installation. An experienced shop can get in done in a 1/2 day or less.

WELL THEN, thank you nice gentlemen for showing me the light....i really didnt think it would cost me 500 for the install, but then again, what do i know...i'm still pretty sure i'm going w/ headers...but should i also think about changing gears down the road?

Well let me just ask this then, what is more bang for my buck? Headers or gears? I wanna do one last mod before winter so those are the two i'm thinking of at the moment.

It took me and my brother six hours to put on my headers and the AC and smog was already off the car. I don't think a shop could do it in an hour, or if they could I don't think they would be honest enough about it. Gears are a good performance gain, but most people will point you in the direction of headers because that is the weak point of our engines and letting it breathe better is probably the best start. The question about the 700R4, if you have an automatic then yes your car does have the 700R4, these trannies are good because they have OD but that is about it. They aren't that strong although it will handle a good amount of power unless you rebuild it. Also they have a steep first gear which is good for taking off, but 2nd gear shifts you out of the power band.

I think gears would make the most difference. Eventually you want to add the headers.

ok...i have the AC...they ripped all the smog crap off(don't really need it..plus its looks horrible)..and they are honest...and considering i was in the shop watching them step by step i know it took a little over an hour and a half...maybe 2 hours...my heads aren't full lenghts...just shorties...not hard to install....
How much do gears generally run and how much for an install? Cause i want something that will help my off the line and whatnot and those sound like a good step

You're going to pay $200 for gears, $100 for an installation kit and at least another $150-200 for labor.

Go to www.gearsareus.com.. Get Motive gears 3.73 gears, they were $135.. Then get the master rebuild kit...$75 Then get an SLP takeoff posi $100, then go get them installed :$200
Total: about $500
Total: about $500
Hmm.... (i'm scratching my chin pubes as i say this) 500 bucks huh...thats about the price for headers w/install, if not more.....gears eh? This would be a nice little addition to my car...alittle somethin right before fall sets in...VERY interesting

Let me add this.
Change gears gotta get the speedo corrected.
Unless you are the sort of person that doesn't care about details. And if you don't care about details then a car is the wrong interest for you.
I'd go with headers first. But that is my personal gutt.
