hi, as you remember i was asking questions about my oil burning problem, and my valves not adjusting correctly, well i finally took the motor out of the car, the 2 cylinders that are burning oil have cracked oil rings, but the walls look perfect and barely have a ridge, i also bought some new roller lifters to solve the ticking problem, my question is, what kind of rings do you recommend or anything that i should look for or do while this motor is apart, i'm gonna bring the block to a machine shop to get it honed and cleaned up, also i took off 3 rod bearing caps, but i mixed them up by accident, does this assembly need to be rebalanced in that case? i'm going to have all new bearings put in it, thanks a lot.

The standard Sealed Power chrome-moly rings are a pretty good product, as are TRW rings. The Sealed Power number is E-356K, in whatever oversize if necessary, IIRC. Definitely make sure the piston ring grooves aren't damaged; the rings should fit tight in them, no more than .005" of gap between the ring and the groove.
You should be able to get the rod caps matched back up if you have only 3, there aren't that many possibilities. They won't mate perfectly and make a smooth round bore unless they are matched with the right rod, so it should be easy to tell. As long as you don't replace anything or do anything else that would change the weight, you should need re-balancing.
Besides all the usual stuff about tearing down and re-assembling a motor, like making sure everything is as clean as possible etc., there's nothing else special I can think of that you would need to do. Maybe check the crank real carefully for wear and polish it, and of course try to figure out why the rings failed; that sounds kind of like an assembly issue though.

ok, well the motor has 70k on it, it's strange that the rings cracked too, the motor was sitting for about a year unstarted when i got it, so i dunno if that has anything to do with it, and yes 1 of the pistons the groove got chewed up, but the other broke in half and overlapped, so the groove on that is okay, i'm going to take it to a machine shop for cleaning and everything else. Thanx
