timing advance at idle

hooked my car up to the scanner today and the timing advance at idle is at 26*. Is that normal or is that way too high. I've never messed with timing before, but it seems like I'll be tackling it soon. Any input on why the timing is that high? I think I need an education on this. Thanks guys!

That is your total advance, not the "base" advance. The computer advances it based on engine speed, throttle position, and load (vacuum).

iroc, the timing you quote is the "base" timing, set with the computer disabled. If you put the light on with the 4-wire connector reconnected, you'd find it advanced well above 4 degrees.

so is that a lot of computer controlled advance? While driving if I get on it, it will jump up to 36* at times, is this normal?

I have vacuum advance, not computer advance, note the msd in the signature.

the car was in park. what happened was I started it and right off it was advanced to like 27*. then as i gave it gas, the timimg went up to about 36*. the same occurs while driving, the timimng is advanced at about 28*, and if I got it I think I've seen the timing up at 40*. The other thing I was wondering is the knock sensor is retarding the timing about 9*-15* at WOT. Is this because the timing is so advanced that I'm gettting detonation? I'm running 93 octane. Any input?

But you were talking to a guy with computer controlled advance. CC uses a base timing that sounds close to a mechanical/vacuum advance system setting. But, what you have doesn't really apply to a CC system, especially if you use timed vacuum for your vacuum advance.

Blue, what's your base timing set at? Are you having any driving, power or pinging problems?

five7kid,
I'm not sure what my base timing is set at as I don't have a timing light. I would assume its at the factory spec. (not sure if thats 0* or a little advanced for my car)
I plan on purchasing a timing light in the near future and checking it.

Right now I'm trying to sort out a SERIOUS LACK of TORQUE in the lower rpms.

I've replaced the O2, wires, plugs, cap and rotor, CTS, Cleaned out the IAC, adjusted the IAC and TPS.
Am I looking at the right area for my symptoms?

O2 sensor works fine, goes into closed loop.
Car runs a little rich, the Block Learn reading stays around 120, and sometimes drops to 112, indicating that the car is running rich.
O2 sensor is at about 500mv-600mv when this happens.
As far as I can tell I've never heard an engine ping or knock of any sort, but I know that doesn't mean that its not occuring. Thanks five7.

I don't have your answer but you are supposed to check/set timing with the car in drive, not park.
