Lets play a game! what is this plug and where does it go?

sorta like *in the governators voice* who is your daddy and what does he do?

so im putting my engine back together and i dont know where these connectors go. also there is a pic of the distributor, is it hooked up correctly? and i think my final question for now is where does the EGR solenoid bolt down to?

thanks guys!

5)

edit, ok, ive gotten all the other ones hooked up. i went to the dealer to get a new EGR switch wire and they wanted $15 so i just stripped the old wire and soldered the connection back on. as for the temp i just moved it to the passanger side and lenthened the wire for it.

thanks again!

The 5th pic looks like the MCS connector on my old CC Qjet... but I dont know if that helps you, since you appear to have TPI.

Pic 1 looks like it goes to the back of the AC compressor.

Pic 2 looks like the EGR temp switch.

Pic 4, the black connector might go to the AC compressor also but not sure. Does it have a diode on it?

I guess that's why it helps to label them before you take 'em off.

EDIT: In pic 4, the orange connector....is it a single wire with a flat connector? If it is that should go to the water temp sensor on the drivers side head.

im pretty sure the first one is to the compressor high pressure switch.

the second one looks to be the EGR valve temp sensor.

in the third pic of the dist, it looks right.

in the forth one im pretty sure the two wire connector is the A/C compressor clutch & the single wire is for the engine temp gage.

the fifth one looks to be for the intake air temp sensor.

the sixth one i can't tell, maybe for the alternator?

when you guys say engine temp sensor do you mean the one that tells the fans when to turn on and on the passanger side?

oh and for the labeling, i can thanks my cousin for that one. he was supposed to help me with this project and when he got here just started ripping things off. now that its time to put this back together he is nowhere to be found.

edited the first post since you guys answered what that was.

The engine temp sensor we're talking about is for the gage only...should be on the drivers side head.

there arent any spots on the drivers side head for anything like that... there was a sensor on the passanger side that i was missing, but someone else said that was a temp switch that told the efan when to come on...

so what would happen if that was not right and i have the heads on the wrong sides and backwards.... this is a 305TPI with 416 heads...

ok im confused... heres a copy and paste from the other thread:

"If your sure it was on the passenger side, than it's the coolant fan switch. With the cylinder head on the car, the fan switch would be towards the rear, in between the #6 and #8 spark plugs. You can get a new one at an auto parts store. It should look like this:

The only other sensor/switch in the cylinder heads is on the driver's side cylinder head. The coolant temp. sending unit (what the gauge in the dash uses to show coolant temp) is located towards the front of the driver's side cylinder head, right in between the #1 and #3 spark plugs."

i thought the one for the dash was located in the intake manifold?

The only other coolant related sender in the intake maniflod is the CTS (coolant temp sensor) that the ECM uses, and has nothing to do with the gage in the dash.

The pass side fan switch is for the secondary fan on dual fan applications. On your 85 you should only have one fan so that fan switch would not apply to you.

This is correct (at least on my 89 with dual fans it was). Check both your heads and see where the sensor is. I don't remember where it is on single fan cars, but it really shouldn't matter.

hmmm... well it would seem that my heads were mixed up then and the one that was on the drivers side is on the passanger side and vise versa...

so what kind of problems is that going to cause? will it work that way? or will i have to tear it all apart again? everything bolted down fine... i could have sworn when the heads were taken off the plug was on the drivers side and the sensor that got lost at the machince shop was on the passanger side.

edit: i found this while searching, PLEASE tell me its true! "heads are universal and can go on either side."

edit again: and if it is can someone post a pic of what the sendor looks like?

If the wire in question is the temp gauge, then there is a easy test. Turn your key on and ground the wire while watching the gauges. The temp gauge should move when you ground the wire. If it doesn't then it is something else. But, if it is a single wire, ususally green, on the drivers side, then it is most likely the temp gauge wire.

BTW. The last picture is the alternator wires!!!!!

The other wire in pick 4 is the a/c clutch switch. Pick 5 is the harness connector for the air temp sensor that is on the bottom of the plenum in fron of the egr. You should have a 10in. harness that connects to that connector and the other end goes to the sensor

the heads are both the same, or they should be.
you can pull the plug from the left head & put it in the right head, that way you can put your temp gage sending unit in left head & not have to worry about making the wire longer.

No. 5 looks like the plug to the IAT sensor. I am assuming this is a TPI engine. It will plug into the IAT sensor on the back underside of the plenum.

And be careful not to break it. I broke mine and can't find another. And GM does not make it any more.

Thats wierd you are having problems finding a new connector for the IAT sensor. They are the exact same connector on a CTS. Usually you get a new cable when you buy a new CTS. I am pretty sure I have like.. 3 of them lying around.

It's the same as the coolant temp sensor connector? Interesting. PM me if you have one lying around. I'd be happy to shoot ya a couple of bucks for it.

Thanks!

I only see one pic posted, and the connector you're holding looks like the:
Dizzy; power & tach which are pink & white

CTS; yellow & black,

MAT under the plenum; tan, and black

This is true for my '88.
