Quick Coolant Question.

Okay me and my dad are flushing out the cooling system and a whole bunch of other stuff. The problem is, he just filled up the engine block with water and wants to just leave it in there, and pour some pre-mixed coolant into the radiator. I'm no pro, but I'm pretty sure this isn't the best idea.

Question: Where is the coolant drain plug on an LO3? And are they usually corroded?

Thanks a lot.

actually you can lower your temps by using distilled water and an additive like water wetter.........straight tap water? oh my, too many minerals

You can pre- mix anti-freeze or do it as your dad did it. Just some small cars have tiny rads, and some of the old anti-freeze solutions were very thick, and didnt circulate too well, so you pre mixed with water in your bucket\watering can\ etc etc to make sure it did.

The lowest block drain would be where your knock sensor is.

If you're doing a flush, just pull the themostat to get everything circulating, drain from the bottom radiator hose.

But, the way your dad is doing it is okay...you'll end up with about a 50/50 mix...close enough not to worry about it IMO.

City tap water is kinda harsh, but you wouldn't be the first to run several hundred thousand miles with it

Okay I guess it will have to work then. I really don't give him enough credit at times. But he's messing with my baby, so I'm a bit paranoid . Thanks a lot guys.

I run straight city tap water, no antifreeze with rust inhibitor. Runs cooler and better than it ever did before. In a couple of months I'll drain the radiator and add straight antifreeze.

You realize running straight anti-freeze is a bad idea? It won't give you nearly the cooling capacity of water.

I think he means just to fill the rad, so it balances out with the straight water in the engine

Well we finished the little project and after a few rivers of coolant running down the garage It's all sealed up, and running cooler than ever.
